Leadership Programs

As we have learned from CompassPoint's nonprofit executive leadership study, Daring to Lead, women are twice as likely as men to lead a nonprofit, yet women lead only slightly more than half of nonprofits with budgets greater than $10 million and make less than their male counterparts in nonprofits of every size.

Capable Leadership is Essential to Mission Achievement

Given these challenges, NSC is committed to providing capacity building opportunities for female leaders at any budget or organization size. NSC is proud to announce the first in several Leadership Pathways as our comittment to the development of strong nonprofit leaders who are ready to invest time and effort to expand their leadership skills. We acknowledge that the investment of time and money on leadership development is difficult to make; but we also believe that not making the committment can be the difference between being a great organization and becoming an extraordinary one.

Leadership Academy for Women Executive Director's Programs

As part of its mission to "build strong nonprofit organizational leaders" NSC provides rigorous and informative leadership development experiences for senior executives. Recognizing the special challenges related to gender and race, the Academy is designed to provide both experiential and intentional learning opportunities to strengthen the nonprofit sector and its leaders.  The Academy experience builds a "learning community" that serves both as a catalyst and support through its intensive experience. The fellowship also provides a unique opportunity for each participant to focus on individual and organizational learning needs.  At the Academy for Women Executive Directors, we believe that:

  • Leadership is an ongoing developmental process
  • Leadership can be learned and should be taught
  • Leadership has special challenges grounded in race and gender
  • Leadership starts with a theory of change and is informed by consistent practice Learning Goals

The Academy for Women Executive Directors provides custom designed development programs.  For a nominal investment of $399 each participant will:

  • Gain New Skills and Confidence
  • Enlarge Networks
  • Broaden Organizational Vision
  • Expand Knowledge
  • Enhance Leadership Capacity
  • Develop a Theory of Change

Components of the Leadership Academy

  • Six facilitated monthly peer learning circles.
  • Two two-day retreats (Opening and Closing Events)
  • Four one-day seminars that build on executive experience and expertise.  The seminar series will enhance the leadership development of participants in these major areas:
    • Communications
    • Governance
    • Financial Management
    • Resource Development

The seminar series provides executives with a concrete set of tools to assist them in the realization of creating change within their organization and within themselves. The seminars provide the opportunity for reflection, peer learning, and networking, including:

  • Individual Mentoring and Coaching
  • Intervention support
  • Additional networking opportunities through Affinity activities

Cost and Application
If selected, health or health-related organizations will submit a participation fee of $399 due prior to the first session. For non-health related organizations, please call Linda Aitch for more information regarding participation fees.  This nominal participation fee represents an investment by the participating executive director and her agency to take part in this program. Funds collected will be used to support the academy and assist agencies for which this fee may be a hardship. If this fee represents a hardship to your agency, please contact Nonprofit Services Center. Payment will be required upon acceptance into the program.

For more information, contact Pamela Coaxum, Pamela@nonprofitservices.org or call 314-436-9580 (toll free 866-433-9580).  Scholarship opportunities are available on a limited basis.
