Class Description:

For many nonprofits, volunteers play a major role in the success of the organization.  In this economic climate with demands on services increasing, a well managed volunteer program can help your organization meet the needs of your constituents.  Help your organization prepare for volunteers, especially with more volunteers coming out of the corporate sector available now to move into roles in service and volunteering.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Clearly articulate the need for volunteers within their organization in terms of mission, work product and social relationship;
• Generally evaluate the organization’s readiness and prepare it for volunteers;
• Implement no less than three specific recruitment ideas for their organization’s volunteer needs;
• Understand the importance of planning for volunteer involvement before, during and after the ask;
• Apply the volunteer personnel pathway to volunteer opportunities and program plans;
• Understand volunteer recognition in its varied components.
• Build a network for personal support in volunteer management.

Presenter's Bio : 

Reneé Johnson is a non-profit generalist with particular expertise and professional experience in volunteer and arts management, grants management and training.  Recently, Reneé became the Executive Director of the Edwardsville Arts Center in Edwardsville, IL.  She continues to be available to consult with non-profit organizations on a myriad of issues and teaches a course on basic volunteer management at Washington University.  She is also a passionate Aqua Tots teacher at the Edwardsville YMCA .

Previously, Reneé co-managed the Minority Arts Program (MAP) of the Missouri Arts Council (MAC).  With her counterpart in Kansas City, Reneé helped minority developed arts programs throughout the state access the financial and technical assistance resources of the Council while providing guidance and coaching in the general growth and development of the non profit organizations. Prior to her work with MAC/MAP, Reneé redeveloped and managed the volunteer and intern programs of the Missouri Historical Society; and, served as the Director of External Communications for the Greater Minneapolis (MN) Girl Scout Council.  Throughout her career, Reneé has fed her passion for exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge as a local, regional and national trainer.  While completing her graduate work in Arts Management at American University, Reneé worked with both local and national arts service organizations based in Washington, D.C.  She also holds a BA in Russian and Chinese Comparative History from Oberlin College.

As a volunteer, Reneé serves the volunteer management field as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Volunteer Management (IJOVA), the United Way Volunteer Center Certification Committee, and as a member and past president of the St. Louis Council – Directors of Volunteer Services.  Her current community involvements include First Vice President of the Board of Directors and many other positions with the Girl Scouts of River Bluffs Council (IL); Oberlin College Alumni Recruiter; and co-chair of the Child Welfare Allocations Panel of the Greater St. Louis United Way.

Registration:

Registration for each workshop is $40 per person and is opened to health-related organizations.  Space is limited to 20 individuals; we encourage two individuals from any one organization register to attend.
